or possibly acting to *create* those futures. Those who could see into the future, acting as oracles. Spirit - The Mediators - Every kind of magi who mediated between spirits and living communities joined this group, a mixture of witches doing folk magic, shamans, and priests who could commune directly with the gods. Often torn by its theological differences. Prime - Children of the One - An alliance of all those who practice devotional religion. Every group that views the world as an illusion, or a trap, or a lesser form of existence came together, from gnostics to Buddhist mystics to people using LSD to seek higher consciousness, all, seeking to pierce the veil and ascend, whatever ascension might mean. Hermetic magi, alchemists of many cultures, The increasing number of people who can make Harry Potter magic work end up in this group to its aggravation. Everyone who engages in rational magic of formulas and systems of equivalence, is part of the Order. (This includes a lot of neo-pagans, martial artists, and in recent years, even some environmentalists and hippies.) Those who work the magic of life, whether to live in harmony with nature, bring perfect crops to the village, or to perfect their control of their bodies is part of this order. Mind you, the Children of Ether ALSO blow up a lot but. They tended to die of paradox a lot, until the Children of Ether defected. Those magi who commanded natural forces ended up together. This is often an unstable alliance.įorces - The Children of Ether. Every kind of death mage ended up together in this alliance, both guardians of the dead and those who used death magic against their enemies. In the modern age, they find themselves in uneasy union with those interested in virtual worlds.Įntropy - The Guardians of the Threshold. This included horse nomads, polynesian sea explorers, and the Romani. At the founding, this was largely representatives from nomadic groups whose magic facilitated travelling and exploring. (Awakening solves all this by disconnecting Mage Organizations from Spheres.)Ĭorrespondence - The Wanderers. and make sense evolving from the situation in the 1400s but also be broad enough to have magi from around the world.'' have a common enough praxis to make sense as a group have a particular sphere (M20 complicates this by giving each Tradition *two* spheres, which gives a lot more flexibility to have Traditions, since you could have 81 different combinations!) The core problem is that we need nine traditions that The actual history of the Traditions basically starts with the Order of Reason throwing European magi down the stairs, then taking their show on the road to the rest of the world. Is that the right choice? Well, that's why there should probably be a greater focus on what the Traditions should be (individually and as an organization): so it's easier to answer what current ones are worth keeping. Isn't the whole point of this to rethink the structure of things to make a better end result? Can the Verbena be split up between the Hermetics, Chakravanti, Dreamspeakers, and Cultists? Sure. There's also no current canon Tradition that can't be chopped up and made part of the other Traditions (maybe leaving a small Craft or two behind). The Hermetics aren't even a purely European Tradition as they've managed to convince close-enough minded mages from all over the globe to become Houses (even if they're still highly Eurocentric given the make-up of the major Houses). You can shove pretty much any Tradition in the OoH, not making the Verbena particularly special in that regard. As far as they're concerned any sufficiently formal magical system can be a Hermetic House everyone who isn't is either stubbornly clinging on to non-vital cultural values, or are too willy-nilly with their magic to hack it as Hermetics. The Hermetics in Ascension are too broad as it is. And if we're rethinking the Traditions, putting the OoH's connections to how things were done in Ars Magica is probably something to put on the chopping block.
